A few finishes:
Modern Gray Top; QUILTED with Bubble Meander (freehand)

Egg Money Top; QUILTED Custom (freehand, SID, ruler)

Intertwined Christmas Strips Top; QUILTED SID

In other news, my blogger won't let me upload any pictures without upgrading my picasa account, so I guess I'll have to look into this. I'm still not sure what this means because I'm mostly computer illiterate. Is there some outer space holding album they're referring to where all my blogger pics are stored? This is all I can surmise in quick fashion & making a guess.

More news includes the proclamation that we have NOT flooded during Hurricane Sandy. I'll admit to feeling guilty for being so happy about this, while others have been so devastated by her effects.

And last, but definitely not least, I took my 16 year old daughter & her best friend to see Justin Bieber in concert last night. Such entertainment... I was beaming & giggling off/on the whole time listening to the girls screaming & seeing the absolute joy on my child's face. There aren't a lot of times that true joy radiates outward, but music seems to set our hearts free, so last night was JOY FILLED.

Will Try to Keep This Short!

There's been a lot going on in the past month I've ignored my poor blog.

My last post was literally one month ago & we'd just started our gym membership. I'm happy to report that we've kept up going twice a week! One of the many great things about having my built-in work-out partners is that even when one of us doesn't feel like going, someone else will urge the rest on. There's only been once that we came out feeling rough & tired. Usually it's rejuvenating.

My younger daughter decided to return to homeschooling. And I LOVE, love, love the homeschool lifestyle, but the amount of time I had to work with in terms of preparing & planning subjects has left me in a bit of a tizzy. No worries, though, as we're up & running mostly on time & mostly full steam.

Besides working out & school-planning my brains out,  I've been quilting. Here are the latest:
Wizard Top; QUILTED with Meandering Loops & Stars (freehand)

Hearts & Squares Top; QUILTED with Puffy Heart Meander (freehand)

Green Lattice & Yellow Squares Top; QUILTED with Puzzle Piece Meander (freehand)

Navy & Cream Half-Square Triangle Top; QUILTED with Bubble Meander (freehand)

Poinsettia Top; QUILTED with Bubble Meander (freehand)

Blue Floral Panel Top; QUILTED with Butterfly Meander (freehand)

Ladybugs & Hearts Top; QUILTED Custom (freehand)

Paisley Stars Top; QUILTED with Puzzle Piece Meander (freehand)

My older daughter started her first college class.

And my younger daughter turned 16.

One other thing I'll mention... a year ago in early September we were cleaning out a muddy, soggy, smelly post-flood mess. I'm so glad we're not dealing with THAT! It seems unreal that it's been a year already though. Time sure does fly...

The Flood of Sept. 2011

I've been absent on blogger for more weeks than usual thanks mostly to Hurricane Lee.

Lee blew through on Wed, Sept 8th with torrential rain like I've never seen. I was standing in Walmart marveling at the loudness of it coming down & heard through that vast box store when my Dad called to ask if I'd heard they were calling for "life threatening flooding conditions".

No, I had not. Somehow we'd been thoroughly warned & properly prepared when Hurricane Irene blew through but were utterly oblivious about Lee's impending doom.

Being we live on the Susquehanna River within a flood plain, we do tend to take notice of these predictions. Fortunately, it takes mighty rain to flood our house specifically.

Unfortunately, Lee brought Mighty Rain.

Thurs, Sept 9th I was up bright & early to see what was what with regard to school, only to find out it was cancelled & that the predictions coming through on our local tv channel was saying we could get enough water to fill our basement & also several feet of our first floor.

IT WAS TIME TO MOBILIZE MY TROOPS!!!

Woke hubby, older daughter, and younger daughter at 7am saying, "Out of bed NOW. We need to pack up & move everything upstairs!!!!"

I called my brother who lives in the next town over & was already at work. He & my SIL dropped everything, brought their trailer & lots of coolers to pack up my fridge/freezer, and helped us all day. And later that day they took 3 of us in plus one of our dogs (the dainty whippet, NOT the spastic lab!) & our kitty.

My parents dropped their plans, managed to get through/around road blockades, which were starting to go up keeping un-locals out, to get to us to watch my brother/SIL's two young sons so they could be with us packing & lugging things up and/or out.

Several of my older daughter's friends dropped what they were doing to spend the day at our house acting as our personal movers: packing, lugging boxes & furniture up to 2nd/3rd floors, moving furniture out, and even helping a few older neighbors move some of their things.

We were in a race against time. A mandatory 5pm evacuation was announced for our small town. As time ticked away, the packing got more haphazard- I open boxes now & laugh at the mumbo-jumbo. Some things were literally just carried up by hand without being boxed up!

Every so often we'd go out to check on the rising waters:

We're on the higher end of our street, and it was creepy watching the water filling it up.

The woods where I sometimes walk the spastic lab going under water.

The drainage grate out front of our house around 4pm on flood day-- the drainage system was so full, the water is beginning to back up into the street... it was time to start our personal evacuation.

Someone took this picture after we'd evacuated. Our street is disappearing, our driveway is gone, and I see just the top of our porch step peeking out. At this point our basement is filling up with water but it hasn't reached the first floor yet.

Some of the aftermath- pictures taken Friday after the waters had begun to recede:

Wet, muddy yuck left on our kitchen floor. The fridge & bottom drawer still had water in them...

This is our trap door entrance leading into the basement from our foyer. Remember this is after the water has receded, but the basement water was trapped & had nowhere to go quickly.

Basement view from the outdoor access...

This is a view of our foyer... you can see the muddy residue left behind from the flood waters. The door on the right leads to the back porch, and the doorway on the left leads to the basement access.

Marshall kept vigil with the pump/hose to make sure it didn't get clogged with all the random stuff floating around

In the end we will have to repair/replace: furnace, a/c, two hot water heaters, an electric panel & it's breakers, all the ductwork, the outside basement door, fridge, dishwasher, built-in oven, two rooms of padding/carpet, amongst other things. And yet I have been thankful every day realizing it all could've been so much worse.

It's amazing & touching to see how we humans will reach out to each other in times of need.

It's been comforting to have neighbors checking on us & doing the same for them... again, helping each other in any ways we could. I was overcome with tears when someone from my parent's church stopped by with a cooler packed with prepared foods, a box of toiletries, socks, a blanket, uplifting books, a case of water, and more- I'd never met her. There were people we didn't know who sent us gift cards for Giant & Walmart.

What a blessing this all was to us! Not only were the gift cards so very practically used when so much extra needed to be bought for our clean-up, they were uplifting to our crumbling spirits.

Sewing, Swimming, and School

We're winding up our summer this week.

I meet this time of year always with a bi-polar personality.

Half of me is eager to get back into a more structured day. Something about the urgency & business of the school year helps me to be more organized, more methodical & thereby more productive.

But the other half of me resists this structure & wants to further enjoy these free-floating days.

And this year is even "more" as I send my younger daughter, now the youngest here, off to public high school on Monday. After being so wrapped up in my kids' schedules & homeschooling them, I'll find myself with time on my hands.

How many days & hours did I fantasize about "me time" back when they were all younger? And now the prospect of me time sounds, well... kinda lonely. But I'm very good at keeping busy! I have three client quilts to work on this upcoming week, amongst other various projects lined up that have been in my mind but on the back burner until I had more time.

Then there are personal, career-oriented goals I haven't seriously thought about in years.
And now I am.

In between school shopping & trying to get in last-summer swims, I've gotten a little sewing done as well.

Made a couple checkbook covers:

This sunflower checkbook cover matches the sunflower purse I just made!

And later I wanted to play with a new eyelet punch tool, so I made this very simple bookmark:

Has anybody used one of these? I ask because the front of the eyelet retained it's red color, but you can see the back of this eyelet rubbed off in the stamping process & has been left silver instead. I'm not sure if I squished it like a beast & thereby rubbed off the color in my quest to MAKE IT STAY?? Or if I have cheap eyelets? Or if this is just the way it is???

It's Friday. We're planning to take a bike ride & enjoy this weather today.

Saturday through Sunday we'll have hurricane Irene come past & so we'll start honing in on the weather report to see how bad our chances are of getting more of the heavy rain which would cause the Susquehanna River to flood our town... my home.

And Monday my daughter will start high school... on her 15th birthday. She's excited to see what high school is like but wishes she were able to sleep in on her birthday!

Thankful to be dry

We watched the rising waters of the Susquehanna River back up into this massive storm drain which leads into our little town.

The 1st picture was taken this past Friday morning after most of the rain had already stopped pelting. Usually there's barely a trickle in there, but we weren't concerned at this point because it was well below the halfway mark of being full.

However, since we're "down river", this 2nd picture shows how on Saturday, well after the rain had quit falling, we were still watching the river by us rise.

And by Sunday afternoon, finally, thankfully, the river crested & we could breathe a small sigh of relief.
(Don't ask me who thought hanging the figure was fun, but it was there... in the way, so it's in my photo >:-/ )

Homes are in danger of flooding here once the water hits the 49' mark. Personally, since we sit a bit higher, we're not in danger of flooding until it hits about 55', just to give a point of reference.

A lot of people who visit us don't understand how the river can possibly flood over the railroad embankment towards our homes. But see that's not how it happens! The picture below shows the view from my front door. The river doesn't flow over the embankment but rather backs up through the above-shown storm drain and then up through the drainage grates by our homes.

During normal weather our rain water runs down our grates into the storm drain and then into the Susquehanna River. But when we have a combination of heavy rains & snow melting up north, it all flows downward towards us & backs everything up.

This last picture shows the view if I walk up onto the railroad embankment & look down to the river. Within those trees are where I usually walk my spastic lab puppy. He'd probably like it down there now --sloshing through the water & mud are his thing. But if he'd take off, it's currently too cold for me to want to go in after him. So yeah, I think we'll just walk the neighborhood until we dry out a bit!

But in the grand scheme of it all... thinking about how scary it can be to worry about my house flooding left me feeling a little....sigh.... what's the word I'm looking for???? .... small, insignificant, but a speck in the realm of world horrors...
